Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity

Organization Description:

Since 1985, Habitat has build more than 200 homes in Pierce County, including homes built in Tacoma, Gig Harbor/Key Peninsula Area, and Lakewood. We are the only organization in Pierce County providing home ownership opportunities to households making 30% to 60% of the Area Median Income.

Habitat's mission and goals are a direct reflection of the urgent need for decent and affordable housing in our community, especially among very low-income families. Habitat is unique in that we provide a lasting and permanent solution to a family's housing crisis.

Habitat is a hand up, not a handout; in addition to making a 0.5% down payment and 0% interest mortgage payments, homeowner families are required to commit 500 hours of "sweat equity" building their own home and the homes of other Habitat families.

Mission Statement:

With God's grace and the cooperation of people from all walks of life, Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity partners with families in need to build and own simple, decent, affordable homes in safe communities.

Organizational Statement of Faith:

Our Christian foundation calls for us to set aside religious differences and work toward a common goal: to eliminate poverty housing in our community. Our values set the stage for this work.

Partnership: From its very conception, Habitat for Humanity has been built on partnerships: partnerships with families, churches, area corporations, community organizations, and individuals. We believe in the power of families working side by side with volunteers to build a Habitat House.

Home Ownership: We believe in the power of home ownership to change lives, improve communities, and build the hope that can break the cycle of poverty.

Diversity: We believe that everyone, from all walks of life, deserves a decent, affordable place to live and that each person has something to contribute to building houses!

Volunteerism: We believe in the power of a community coming together to make a difference, and we are committed to providing exceptional volunteer experiences.

Stewardship: We believe we are responsible to our community and to those who give generously so that we can continue to build houses in partnership with families in need. We are committed to excellence and to the efficient use of our resources, and are accountable to our funders, families, and volunteers.
