Information Systems

From MissionTechWiki

Information Systems covers systems designed to store information in a structured way. For example, email is not really an information system, although it does contain a lot of information. Often an organization realizes just how much information is buried in emails and tries to find some sort of Knowledge Management solution.

Information Systems is sometimes used to subdivide Information Technology, for example a company may have an IT department and an IS department. Usually the IT side handles hardware, network and operating systems support, whereas the IS department handles the support for the specific systems that the organization uses: Financials and Accounting, Contact Management, and for missions Donor Management.

Information Systems is sometimes used by organizations to refer to their Information Technology department, but according to Webopedia, this is inaccurate (Webopedia Term: IS)
