The Lilly Endowment seeks to provide support for programs relating to religion, education, community development. The foundation also supports programs which supports youth and leadership development as well as philanthropic and charitable programs.

The Lilly Endowment's grants are limited to Indiana with special focus on Indianapolis.

The foundation asks that all applicants to submit a letter that does not exceed 2 pages. Applications submitted by fax or e-mail will not be accepted.
An application form is not required.
The foundation seeks to award grants to community development projects such as those promoting the arts, capital building, and social services. Individual grants are not generally given except in cases for : 1) fellowships that are awarded under special programs 2) endowments (except for Indiana-based community foundations)
The foundation does not support healthcare programs, mass media projects, libraries or for individual schools (elementary and secondary).
