Granny's Garden School

Organization Description:

In Granny’s Garden, students plant, harvest, and eat the produce they raise, supply the school cafeteria and share the surplus with the local food pantry and a soup kitchen in Over the Rhine. Much more than a simple garden program, we also have a ¾ mile nature trail where students can learn about habitats, erosion, native/invasive plants, forest canopy, decomposition and other environmental topics in their own "back yard." The program has been incorporated into the school day with hands-on, standards based lesson plans. Students come out weekly with their classroom teacher to work in one of the more than 100 vegetable gardens under the guidance of a Granny’s Garden School teacher.

We are the largest and most comprehensive school garden program in the Midwest. Though based on school grounds, Granny’s Garden School is a separate 501 (c)(3) non-profit and we are not financially supported by the school district. We collaborate with the schools to offer our innovative program to the students at no charge.

Mission Statement:

Granny's Garden School uses the school grounds to help students discover the beauty and importance of nature, to experience the satisfaction of growing their own food and to appreciate the simple pleasure of picking a flower. We collaborate with schools and the community to offer fun, imaginative, hands-on learning to compliment the school's curriculum. We guide educators in the innovative and practical conversion of school grounds into self-sufficient learning environments that encourage critical thinking, problem solving and love for nature.
