Coatesville, a city of 13,000, lies forty-five miles west of Philadelphia. Twenty-two percent of Coatesville's residents live below the poverty line. Coatesville youth often face problems that are difficult to overcome.
According to FBI statistics, Coatesville's violent crime rate is 220% higher than the national average. Gang violence and youth crime have both been on the rise in recent years. Coatesville's children, predominantly African American and Latino, struggle academically and have an insufficient adult support network during the critical after-school hours
