Dayanand Hospital
Talasari in the rural district of Thane about 150 km. from the metropolis of Mumbai. It is of paramount social concern for the Varli tribe which inhabits that area and was first introduced to Christ by the Jesuits and Canossians over 50 years ago. The tribals have been schooled by the Jesuits, about 70 girls boarded by the Canossian sisters and the health care needs of the tribals almost exclusively attended to by Dayanand Hospital owned and run by the Canossian sisters.
The need for health care has increased as the population has exploded and the area had been neglected for development by the government. So the tribals came to rely exclusively for treatment on Canossian Sisters to cater to the rampant leprosy cases (for which the sisters run a separate unit) and the myriad tropical diseases like Malaria, Tuberculosis, Sickle cell anaemia, Trachoma, Malnutrition and Gastroenteritis, HIV and a host of respiratory tract infections.
The closest referral hospital is more than 30 km. away from these villages with no regular means of affordable transport. These patients are a majority of very poor people many of who live below line. So even if they go to a public or private hospital, which is 30 km away, they cannot expect to afford it nor to receive the required quality healthcare that we deliver.
