BELO RURAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION

Organization Description:

BERUDEP has its roots in the North West Province of Cameroon, where the project still concentrates its activities today.

In 1990 the initiative of a local man, Simon Ngwainmbi, attracted the interest of the local church and farming community in his dedication to help the disabled in the North West community of Mbingo II. With this expansion of members came the expansion of purpose, and the project became known as the Family Association Rural Development Project (FARDP).

FARDP made great strides in channelling goods and relief to a great number of disabled people in both Mbingo and neighbouring areas. Towards the mid 1990s, FARDP, through its work with the vetiver system, was introduced to the Vetiver network of the World Bank which provided opportunities for representatives to witness vetiver programs overseas as well as providing access to grants for the purpose of organising workshops in Mbingo. At this time, as FARDP was expanding, a name change saw them become Belo Rural Development Project (BERUDEP).

A CIG (Common Initiative Group) was formed under the rules of association by the Government of Cameroon NW/GP/29/97/1373 in 1997.
Today BERUDEP has a team of paid local staff working in 3 branch offices in Boyo Division, North West Province and also works with volunteers from all over the world. Links with international and national organisations working towards similar goals, have provided BERUDEP with strength, training and advice. BERUDEP however remains a local organisation who work and live in the areas where their people are in the most need.
