Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte

Organization Description:

With over 100 years of service, Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to bringing the power of mentoring to youth from traditionally under served communities. Through the following specially designed program, we are able to target specific populations and communities.

The Amachi Program/ People of faith mentoring children of promise. Research shows that 70 percent of children of incarcerated parents will themselves at some point be incarcerated unless they have positive adult intervention. That is why mentoring children of prisoners is a key component of Big Brothers Big Sisters goal to reach more kids, especially those who may face significant risk factors.

Amachi, a West African word that means who knows but what God has brought us through this child, is the name of an initiative that connects children of prisoners with mentors including recruited from the faith community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte partners with Prison Fellowship Ministries specifically with their Angel Tree Ministries. There are currently over 5,000 children in the Charlotte Metro area with an incarcerated parent. We as a community can decide to invest our time, talent and treasure in these children now or expect to invest a lot of treasure in the future building larger jails and prisons to keep up with the ever increasing inmate population.

If you or your church is interested in exploring the benefits of an Amachi partnership and changing the lives of these children, please contact Iman Graham at 704-910-1301 ext. 1025or iman.graham@bbbs.org. We are actively looking forvolunteers including churches willing to provide volunteers from their membership to mentor these children.
