Boston Learning Center

Organization Description:

Boston Learning Center (BLC) is a private, community-based, non-profit, tutorial center modeled after the renowned Harvard Literacy Laboratory at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. Founded in 1981 by a Boston Public Schools teacher, BLC has helped over 4,000 students from Boston's public, private, parochial, and charter schools. Our mission is to transform motivation in order to promote ownership of the learning process in middle and high school students so they can realize their full potential in school and in life.

To fulfill its mission, BLC currently offers four academic after-school programs for middle and high school students: The Private/Small Group Tutoring Program, The Building Inspiration to Fight Failure (BIFF) Program, a motivational learning skills program that teaches at-risk teenagers the techniques required to achieve academic success, the Diamond Girls Program, and S.A.L.S.A. (Students Advocating Life without Substance Abuse) Program, a presentation and leadership skills program for high school students, promoting healthy drug-free lifestyle choices while encouraging students to excel in school. Collectively, these four programs serve over 700 predominately African-American and Latino students in grades K-12 from low-income and underserved communities in Boston (Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, and Hyde Park).
