Calhoun Heights Community Outreach, Inc.

Organization Description:

The Calhoun Heights Community Outreach Incorporated (CHCOI) is an organization that values the well-being of its communities. It was incorporated in 2009, by a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need to motivate individuals into building better communities. In the midst of disintegrating families, deteriorating communities, overpopulated prisons, and emptying classrooms, CHCOI sees it imperative to provide effective, comprehensive programming that will address the problems of today’s at risk youth and begin reconnecting youth to their families, communities, and schools.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

After School and Summer Enrichment Program
The after school and summer enrichment program is aimed at youth in grades K-12 and is rooted in a subtle but powerful shift of focus from one of identifying "problem youth" to a focus of "identifying youth potential". Students will follow a daily curriculum consisting of snacks, homework, reading, writing, math, computer lab, physical education activities, and performing arts.

Healthy Me Initiative
Healthy Me Initiative is an exercise program developed by an LPN. Community members follow a rigorous diet and exercise plan. Individuals are weighed in each week and given nutritional tips and information to improve their individual diets and exercise routines.

Tobacco Prevention
The Tobacco Prevention Program is focuses on four intervention areas which include: Eliminating Exposure to Secondhand Smoke, Preventing Initiation Among Young and Young Adults, Promoting Quitting Among Youth & Adults, and Addressing Disparities. Currently, CHCOI work in Calhoun, Ouachita, Hempstead, and Miller counties, promoting tobacco prevention in existing organizations, schools, churches, medical facilities, and more.
