Constru Casa Guatemala
Guatemala has one of the most unequal income distributions in its hemisphere, according to the World Bank. The U.S. Department of State reports that the wealthiest 20% of the population consumes 51% of Guatemala’s GDP. As a result, about 51% of the population lives on less than $2 a day and 15% live on less than $1 a day (Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, 2010.)
For 10 years, Constru Casa located in Antigua, Guatemala, a beautiful world heritage site, has constructed over 600 houses and over 20 schools throughout Guatemala.
Constru Casa aims to make a difference in changing the lives of poor Guatemalan families by offering them the opportunity of affordable and safe housing. Families assist in the building of their new homes and are expected to pay back 1/3 of the cost, over a 4 year period.
We work in partnerships with many local social organizations in identifying families who live in homes made out of corn stalks or corrugated metal homes with dirt floors.Volunteers work alongside our Guatemalan masons as well as the families who will be receiving the house. Work sites are situated throughout Guatemala, and we ask that volunteers be flexible in their placement as construction sites are dependent on donations. This is a very exciting opportunity for those who want to have a REAL Guatemala experience.
