East African Community Services
EACS serves the East African community of King County, WA, and in particular, Southeast Seattle. EACS offers both youth and adult programming to strengthen the capacity of the East African community. The NewHolly campus, where the EACS office is located, has a high concentration of Somali residents. EACS bridges the gap between the parent, student, and the community.
Youth programs include After School Homework Help, in-home tutoring, and leadership building. Adult programs include ESL Talk Time, Citizenship training, and Computer Literacy classes.
In 2000, four Somali refugees built collaborative relationships with community agencies and government programs throughout King County. They incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 2001. This new organization—the Refugee Social Development Resource Center—later changed its name to East African Community Services (EACS) to reflect its core mission of helping all communities from East Africa. EACS is an inclusive organization that is dedicated to improving the well-being and quality of life of refugees and their families in the King County, while at the same time encouraging our clients to preserve their diverse cultural heritage.
