Harvey Scott SUN Community School

Organization Description:

Harvey Scott School is a K-8 with a vibrant and active school community. OMSI Family Night, Movie Nights, SUN Showcases and community meals, BBQs and the Talent Show are some of the spirited events families and students attend throughout the year. Harvey Scott has a diverse student body: ~88 percent free and reduced lunch, 74 percent students of color, 39 percent English Language Learners and 14 percent special education. After school there are often families socializing in the Scott lobby, speaking Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese and other languages.

The 2009-2010 school year was the startup year for Harvey Scott SUN Community School. Building from the ground up, SUN created an after school program with enrichment, recreation and academic opportunities for K-8th grade students. Some of the most popular SUN classes include Skate Club, Cooking 101, Taekwondo, Exploratory Photography, Soccer, Computer Club, Cooking 101, Mixed Media Art, Bike Club and Be Your Own Superhero. In addition to after school programming, SUN hosts community events and workshops, ESL classes and connects families to community resources such as energy assistance and clothing closets.

Mission Statement:

The overwhelming majority of Community SchoolsÂ’ students qualify for free or reduced lunch and have been identified as being at-risk of academic failure; many speak English as a learned language. Community SchoolsÂ’ activities promote student achievement, enrich day-school curriculum, and increase school attendance. All participants also have access to an after-school meal and homework support. Recent examples of extended-day activities include ESL (English as a second language) classes for students and their families, dance and movement classes, college and financial aid informational sessions, study halls & homework clubs, and cultural celebrations for Black History Month & Cinco de Mayo.
