Indy Reads

Organization Description:

Indy Reads is the only organization in Central Indiana accredited by ProLiteracy Worldwide providing free basic adult literacy tutoring to adults who read at or below the sixth grade level. Utilizing trained volunteers we will work with over 1,100 adult students in 2010, helping them to become self-sufficient. Volunteer training is the foundation of our organization. After going through an orientation, volunteers then go through training before they are matched with a student from our waiting list or begin working in one of our Literacy Labs.

In 2009 Indy Reads provided free tutoring and literacy assistance to 983 adults in Central Indiana - a 76% increase over 2008, and a 180% increase over 2007. Our goal is to "Make Indianapolis 100% Literate." We believe that everyone should have an opportunity to learn to read. Since 1984, we have been helping to open doors for adults through literacy.
