LORAX Community

Organization Description:

Lorax Community exists as a way to provide educational resources to members of our community at a reasonable cost, and also to offer charitable services when needed.

Areas of focus include:

HUMANITY- Our project focuses primarily upon teaching people how to cultivate, forage, consciously buy and mindfully prepare food for themselves and their families. Our main objectives are based upon a philosophy of peaceful (Ahimsa) co-existence with nature and other species as part of our everyday existence and community ethic.

Culinary aspects of our Community Spaces/Garden Sanctuaries focus chiefly upon food preparation and nutritional education geared toward transitioning people toward a more plant-based diet and planet-friendly lifestyle. We host healthy food preparation demonstrations and classes, in addition to occasional potlucks, brunches, luncheon and dinner social events. Sharing and providing freshly made treats from our kitchens and gardens at community events relating to public awareness of relevant issues is an important aspect of our mission.

ENVIRONMENT- Agricultural aspects of our project place particular emphasis on heirloom and organic gardening practices from an ahimsa and environmentally sound perspective. We are currently equipped with a small indoor gardening space in our New York headquarters which allows us to grow and maintain our reproducing cycle year-round with the aid of full-spectrum lighting. Many of our seedlings are planted in the outdoor garden space during the warm seasons, while the remainder may be provided for other community garden spaces or offered as gifts to members of our community to nurture and cultivate in their own homes. We are presently working toward the implementation of both wild foraging and permaculture/sustainable living educational programs.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

- Assistance with creation and ongoing development of sustainable living systems within communities and individual family units

- Assistance with structuring of support systems within communities between local farmers and other local businesses.

- Encouragement of individuals to further build, strengthen community structures and systems by supporting local farms and businesses through ongoing patronage and exchange of services.

- Establishment and implementation of a system for community wholesale bulk buying from small businesses, family farms and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) organisations reaching outward from local as a means to expand and share resources between communities.

- Instruction of urban organic gardening through seminars and workshops

- Teaching seed preservation through the development of an organic, heirloom seed bank and sharing model

- Instruction in wild food foraging through seminars and practical workshops in the wild

- Development of a community resource sharing model which will benefit all participants equally without discrimination as to gender, race, creed, financial status or age

- Encouraging individuals to honour all life forms and to sustain themselves with the least amount of harm to other species and the environment as a whole

In pursuance of the above aims, we may give seminars at public events, produce educational materials, videos, booklets and websites. From time to time to we may also hold fundraising campaigns to finance the aforementioned projects.

We at the Lorax Community collective are eager to combine forces with other community service-oriented organisations on any edible gardening projects, classes and educational services related to such. We are also interested in closely connecting with local farmers and other eco-friendly businesses within our local communities to cross-promote and help one another to best serve those striving to attain similar goals.
