Migration Volunteers Tanzania
The ideas that ultimately led to the formation of Migration Volunteers Tanzania (MVT) began when founder Amos Lufumbilo was a young Tour coordinator and his clients asked him about the poverty in Africa. Though he had grown up surrounded by poverty in an African village, he had never really questioned it; but having reached a state of relative prosperity he began to look for ways to address the development problems he encountered. Amos and several of his colleagues began doing volunteer work during the low season to support the local community. They knew that this was not enough, and that there was tremendous potential to be tapped by creating a partnership between community service work and their role as tour coordinator. Amos began offering his safari & Mountain climbing clients the opportunity to do volunteer work, and in 2013 Migration Volunteers Tanzania was born. Today, Migration Volunteers Tanzania is a certified Tanzanian non-governmental organization that provides care, intervention, material and logistical support to over 14 Kilimanjaro region community organizations. We continue to grow to address the changing needs that we encounter. Beginning in 2010, Amos became aware that the biggest challenge facing poor children was the lack of educational opportunities that would help them to become economically self-sufficient, which led Migration Volunteers Tanzania to its newest project, the Moshi Youth Village. Going forward, we expect that the Moshi Youth Village will become a model for a new approach to community education and development. We continue to learn and adapt and work to empower local communities and individuals to create pathways out of poverty. We value education, community problem solving, protecting and empowering vulnerable populations, ownership and accountability, and progress to end poverty through teamwork. Volunteers (Students) will spend approximately 8 hours per day participating in orientation, attending class lectures, engaging in discussions and group work, and completing handson field work training
