WHAT DOES MDA NEW MEXICO CHAPTER DO?

The Muscular Dystrophy Association, New Mexico chapter serves 765 individuals in New Mexico, which includes individuals residing in and around New Mexico. The chapter consists of three staff members who handle fundraising and community activities and one health care services coordinator who organize local clinics, summer camp, educational conferences and support groups and works with patients and their families to help with their needs.

MDA New Mexico Chapter improves the quality of life of those it serves through its medical and support services outlined below:

MEDICAL SERVICES MDA sponsors the following clinics in 2012, which may be accessed by anyone in New Mexico and surrounding areas:

· University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, 4 adult and 2 pediatric each month

These clinics provide the following services at no cost: · Complete examination to determine diagnosis for individuals suspected of having a muscle disease.

· Periodic re-evaluations for those with one of the 43 neuromuscular conditions covered in MDA?s service program.

· Physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy consultations.

· Flu inoculations

· Genetic counseling

.SUPPORT SERVICES: MDA New Mexico chapter also provides the following support services in 2010:

· Assistance with repairs of manual or power wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices

· Loan of durable medical equipment.

· Referral to other health and community agencies.

· Publication of a quarterly newsletter.

· Formation of support groups as needed.

· Education through clinics and conferences.

· Consultation with schools regarding their students diagnosed with any of the 43 neuromuscular conditions in MDA?s service program.

· Public health education at schools, businesses and organizations.

· MDA sponsors and organizes an annual week-long summer camp for youth age 6 ? 17 diagnosed with one of the 43 neuromuscular conditions covered by MDA's service program. In New Mexico each June, MDA campers attend camp at Manzano Mountain Retreat near Torreon, New Mexico.
