The Newburgh Ministry

Organization Description:

The Newburgh Ministry was incorporated in 1988 and the work of advocacy and social change continued for and with the people. We participated in rallies and marches in Washington carrying slogans such as "No War for Oil". A pre-employment program was established and a van provided people with rides for job interviews. The play center was expanded to include brightly colored tables and chairs and baby cribs decorated to soothe any baby. Interactive toys, games, and puzzles were there for children who came to visit and play. The thrift store was expanded, offering racks and racks of neat and clean clothing, just slightly used. The hospitality center offered a circle of comfortable chairs where people could come and talk, read the newspaper, share stories or just sit quietly. The center has hosted many a game of dominoes, much laughter and singing, intense discussions and also many tears and heartbreaking stories. It is also a place people can network and offer help to one another.
As of April 2010 over 11,000 nights have been spent at Winterhaven due to the faithful work of hosts of volunteers. Winterhaven was conceived of as a temporary solution to address the immediate needs of homeless individuals. The Ministry's intention was to rehabilitate its facility on Johnston Street to make it sufficient to use space on the second floor as emergency and transitional shelter beds for up to 19 individuals.
