ReNEW Schools
ReNEW Schools is a group of two charter schools. As part of Louisiana’s school accountability structure, both of these schools have been approved for restart as they have been chronically underperforming schools. Following Hurricane Katrina, Live Oak and Laurel Elementary Schools were folded into the state take over schools run by the Recovery School District (RSD), a direct branch of the Louisiana Department of Education. Within the 3 years that these schools spent in direct management by the state, they continued to perform in the lowest third of thirty three total schools. For this reason the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved ReNEW’s charters for these two schools, which are located within the same neighborhood. Under ReNEW, the two schools have transformed into open-enrollment college-preparatory programs.
