The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army reaches out to all regardless of ethnicity, age, gender, religion, or lifestyle through various social services and programs with the hope that by meeting their basic needs for shelter, food, clothing, and love, they will eventually come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
In addition to the well known Thrift Store, The Salvation Army in Spokane operates a food bank, transitional housing, a family homeless shelter, a sports & warm water aquatics program, a summer camp and retreat center, a foster care program, and a church with weekly activities for adults, children and seniors.
There are also several seasonal programs and fundraisers including, the Clothe-A-Child Winter shopping spree for needy children (Dec.), the Thanksgiving Distribution of turkeys and meal prepartions (Nov.), the Red Kettle Drive (Nov./Dec.), and the Camp Gifford Golf Classic and Children's Benefit Dinner & Auction (June).
The Better Business Bureau asks charities to spend no more than 35% of their budgets on administration. The Spokane Salvation Army cuts this allowance in half by allocating no more than 18% of funds for staffing and fund-raising, combined.
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church.
Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the Love of God. Its mission is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
