The Salvation Army

Organization Description:

The Salvation Army has been at work the Monterey Peninsula since 1895. We serve the homeless, low-income families and youth of all ages through our various programs and worship services.

Family/Transitional Housing:
The Salvation Army offers two family housing programs with the goal of helping families transition into permanent housing and self-sufficiency. Both programs seek to offer a safe environment for families transitioning from homelessness in hopes of gaining a more stable life. We do this by providing case management and helping our clients learn necessary skills for independent living such as financial management, credit repair, parenting and job skills.

Social Services/Good Samaritan Center:
The Salvation Army Good Samaritan Center is day use only center providing essential services to homeless and low-income clients on the Monterey Peninsula. We offer supportive services ranging from basic daily needs to long-term case management.

Child Development Center:
The Salvation Army Child Development Center provides learning experiences in a loving and supportive atmosphere. Children have access to art, music, science, dance and dramatic play, through education and recreation. Certified teachers work with children in curriculum such as language arts, number and reading readiness, large and small motor development and perceptual awareness.

Various programs are available for different age groups:
Preschool - ages 2 1/2 to 5
Latchkey - ages 6-12

Youth Center:
The Youth Center is a ministry of The Salvation Army Church: Our purpose is to create a safe, healthy environment where all people are welcome and encouraged to grow and share their gifts and talents for the glory of God. We have homework help and work on extra academic skills, chapel, music classes (guitar, piano, drums), art classes, cooking, arts & crafts, game room, and outdoor recreation and sports. We also take children to participate in the First Tee Jr. Golf Program at Laguna Grande Golf Course.

Hours: Monday-Friday from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm (Wednesday 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm)

Holiday Assistance:
Each year, The Salvation Army serves over 1,200 families in need on the Monterey Peninsula during the holiday season. Whether it is a food box for a family, a gift bag for a senior or new toys for a child, our goal is to spread the hope and joy of the season to those most in need.

Mission Statement:

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Organizational Statement of Faith:

The Salvation Army's eleven articles of faith reflect our determination to remain faithful to our standards and principles. All members of The Salvation Army are encouraged to review these principles from time to time and to reaffirm before God their dedication to Him and to His good works.

1. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.

2. We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.

3. We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co-equal in power and glory.

4. We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.

5. We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocence, but by their disobedience, they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall, all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.

6. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.

7. We believe that repentance toward God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and regeneration by the Holy Spirit are necessary to salvation.

8. We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.

9. We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.

10. We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

11. We believe in the immortality of the soul, the resurrection of the body, in the general judgment at the end of the world, in the eternal happiness of the righteous, and in the endless punishment of the wicked.
