Shelter Youth Hostel Ministry

Organization Description:

The Shelter Youth Hostel Ministry is a Christian ministry to travelers. In the city centre of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, we run two Christian youth hostels: The Shelter City and The Shelter Jordan. Each year, almost 40,000 backpackers and tourists are spending one or more nights in our hostels. In addition to providing them with good accommodation, our desire is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with these young travelers.

The ministry of The Shelter started in 1971, and was initiated by the association Tot Heil des Volks ("For the salvation of the people"), a registered charity in Amsterdam. Since 1855 this non-denominational organization has been doing missionary work in Amsterdam and other parts of the Netherlands.

Mission Statement:

Many young travellers are not only on a physical journey, but also on a spiritual one. The Shelter Youth Hostel Ministry welcomes these international travelers in the friendly atmosphere of the hostel and shares the good news of Jesus Christ with them. Our two Amsterdam based hostels become a mission field when 40.000 travelers from many nations come and stay with us each year.

Organizational Statement of Faith:

The Shelter Youth Hostel Ministry is not part of a church and is also not connected with a particular denomination. We consider ourselves evangelical, meaning that we hold to the authority of Scripture, mans need for personal salvation through Christ, and the commission given to us by Christ to make disciples of all nations.
The volunteers who join our team come from various church and cultural backgrounds. Therefore, we stress the basis of our unity in Christ and we give freedom for diversity of doctrinal beliefs when it comes to nonessentials.
