ST PETER'S COMMUNITY NETWORK-NORTHERN KENYA
Turkana District is located in north west of Kenya .It is inhabited by approximately 800,000 people mainly Turkana pastoralists .The surface area is about 7,000 in kilometers of arid and semi-arid land. The land is mainly suitable for pastoral production system.other forms of production like Fishing,Handicrafts and mining are significantly practiced .The Turkana land is a trust land with the county council holding its trust for the Turkana community.
Persistent droughts have reduced the livestock biomass over the years .Due to lack of education reaching the majority of people, most of the population in Turkana is either illiterate or semi-illiterate .They have remained the marginalized groups in terms of education and general development.
Because of the government policy not taking keen interest in this area,Turkana district has remained a conflict prone region due to its geographical location .The district borders other hostile pastoral tribes in Sudan,Uganda and Ethiopia and some part of Kenya specifically west pokot.
The acquisition of sophisticated firearms by their bordering tribes has made cattle rustling a very devastating exercise.
The instability in the Sudan ,Ethiopia and Uganda has increased raiding in livestock which usually results in the loss of human life and livestock which is the main stay of the people.
