Urban Catholic Teacher Corps of Boston College and the Archdiocese of Boston
The Urban Catholic Teacher Corps (UCTC) is a two year post-graduate service program that offers new teachers an opportunity to gain classroom experience in the inner city under the guidance of experienced Catholic school teachers. UCTC members teach full time in Boston's urban Catholic schools and live together in a community house.
TO JOIN UCTC, YOU MUST:
- Have student teaching experience in elementary or secondary
education or one year of supervised full-time teaching experience
- Hold a Bachelor's degree
- Commit three summers and two academic years to the Corps
- Want to teach in urban Catholic schools
- Have a commitment to Catholic education
- Desire to live in a faith-based community
UCTC PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE:
- Free housing
- Medical and dental benefits
- a stipend for personal expenses and books (~$10,000 per year)
- tuition remission for graduate courses in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College (if separately admitted)
- through AmeriCorps, loan forbearance and two educational vouchers to be put towards past educational debt or future educational endeavors
The fundamental principals of teaching as service, simple living, community life, and fellowship and spirituality are the cornerstones of the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps. Twelve UCTC volunteers live together in a community house in the urban area of Dorchester, Mass., where they support each other in every aspect of their personal and professional lives. UCTC volunteers are full-time regular classroom teachers during the academic year and take classes or do service during the summers and, at times, during the Fall and Spring.
