Virginia Mentoring Coalition

Organization Description:

The Virginia Mentoring Coalition (VMC), a program service of Hand and Hand, Inc., provides mentoring services and academic support to youth with an emphasis on:

· youth whose parent(s) are or have been incarcerated
· youth within the juvenile justice system and
· youth living in neighborhoods with higher than average rates of incarceration

VMC seeks caring adults (18+) to serve as mentors for young people ages 4-18. Our program engages youth impacted by incarceration in constructive activities with the goal of increasing self-esteem, enhancing communication and social interaction skills and improving academic performance. We connect young people with compassionate adult mentors who can help make a positive difference in their lives. Mentors pledge four hours per month for one year to ensure consistency and stability in the child’s life. Mentors can participate in one-to-one, school-based, community or group mentoring. All applicants are screened and trained prior to matching.
