WAMA Children of Uganda is a Christian-based ministry whose mission and mandate is to secure the life of Ugandan children through education for orphans, empowerment for widows, education and prevention of HIV/AIDS, income generating activities, evangelism, and church in order to meet the physical, spiritual and emotional needs to orphans and widows facing welfare problems and HIV/AIDS.

Our aim is to reach all kinds and depths of people who are afflicted, infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in both rural and urban communities through various means, especially the teaching of the love and virtue of Jesus Christ.

We are a fully registered non-profit organization and derive our support from the invaluable services of volunteers and other Christian resources helping us reach horizons and societies that can not be easily reached by the average person.

ABOUT US
WAMA Children of Uganda (abbreviated as WAMA-Uganda) is an independent non-profit indigenous Christian-based charitable organization. The organization was started in 2008 by Pastor Steven kakuma ,pastoring New life christian center in efforts to stop the tide of orphaning and the spread of HIV/AIDS, which are two factors that WAMA members frequently seek prayer and counseling for.
The need for services has been growing at a speed so terrific that the intended boundaries of WAMA-Uganda have been outstripped by the high demand of physical, financial and personal resources. Because of the endless spreading of AIDS and increasing abject poverty, WAMA-Uganda will be upgraded from a small community based organization to a non-governmental organization. By this year, WAMA-Uganda will be a fully fledged independent organization with headquarters in Jinja, located in Eastern Uganda about two hours away from the capital, Kampala, Uganda.and with its head office in mafubira village

HIV/AIDS

Here in Uganda, there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of primary school going children who are sexually active ‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚– from 61% of the boys dropped to 5%, and 25% of the girls dropped to 3% between 2000 and 2006. However, children who are 19 and younger still have an alarmingly high rate of 52% who are sexually active, 28% of them are already married off. Many are having sex from their early teens. They urgently need the knowledge and skills to protect themselves from HIV and other STDs.

Complacency could spell disaster and roll back the much-acclaimed strides Uganda has moved in the fight against this epidemic. We have to keep the foot onto the pedal. Although WAMA-Uganda is small and terribly under facilitated, we have stood up to be counted among the gallant combatants in this battle.

We walk deep into the most remote villages and teach the basics: what HIV/AIDS is, what it actually is not, ways and means of protection from infection, and how to treat and care for the victims without discrimination. In vicinities where there is electricity, we watch videos about HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases and nutrition. When we deem it practicable, social care groups made up of WAMA volunteers mobilize a parish and use the local political leadership of the area in concert with WAMA-Uganda. This is where we also reach out to the chronically ill, analyze the vulnerability rate of the children and take appropriate corrective measures, commensurate with our capacity. We administer over-the-counter medication, advice on when and where to visit professional medical care, and offer basic necessities like maize flour, beans, salt, soap, paraffin and sugar. We also provide condoms through this approach, as we realized that the cost of a 3-pack of condoms in the local shops is the equivalent of almost 2 to 3 meals in this part of the country. This high price makes it difficult for a sustainable positive trend in this crusade.
EVANGELISM
AIDS decimates the social fabric of a community, and leaves the whole spiritual edifice teetering at the brink of total collapse. The hard fact that this pandemic lacks a cure leaves the infected and affected people so hopeless that this hollowness rubs off onto and seeps progressively into the individual.

This physical hollowness can easily translate into spiritual need, ultimately bringing questions to the institution of belief, where people begin to question the use of their God to them. Because spiritual satisfaction is part and parcel of the entity of humanity, provision of humanitarian assistance without it is more like preparing for a journey to the land of nowhere. For as it is written in James 1:27, ‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚"Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is that which cares for the widows and orphans in their distress.‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚" As Christians, we can only put claim to the fact that we are true believers, only when we exhibit unqualified compassion to those in need.

This is actually the source of inspiration to our staff members who volunteer without any form of pecuniary motivation. As we sensitize the communities about AIDS, we are given the opportunity to introduce them to the path of Christ Jesus. The people are more than glad to receive the Word because it gives them a new hope. Due to the foregoing, evangelism is now central to our work, serving as a pivotal point in everything that we lay our hands upon. We have an outreach team that offers spiritual guidance and comfort, through which we have seen many people give their lives to the Lord and have a total behavioral turn around. It is not that easy to practice abstinence or being faithful without supernatural supervision. We are convinced that a God-fearing populace will develop mechanisms that will inevitably curtail the further spread of this epidemic and save the future generations from this horrible pandemic plus the incidence of orphaning and vulnerability.
CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNITY
Up until the beginning of the year 2009, we had a database of 500 children, and we have conducted a thorough evaluation of the need. We can only meet the need of about 35 children. Our social workers and community based representatives found that most of these children have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, and most of them are not in school.

Some of them live on their own without parental covering of any kind, while some live with grandparents. When the parents of the children die, the burden of raising the orphans often falls on the shoulders of their grandparents who may be too poor to raise the child decently. At least a few children now have regular monthly support from concerned partners and friends, but, even as we celebrate this, we are still posed with the challenge to support the rest of the children.

This is where you come in. You can contribute so we can help the remaining children. Whenever a financial gift comes in we channel it to help some of the school fees, books, pencils, clothing and material support. We are in need of more people to sponsor children. US$100 per month will send one child to primary school and provide them with food and clothing, and US$200 per month will send one child to secondary school and provide food and clothing. Please stand with us and pray for us as we attempt to show a generation of orphans that there is a God who cares about them and loves them.

CHILDREN IN THE ORPHANAGE
The number of kids has lately moved up from 69 to 80 due to the increasing need in the community where local leaders have continued to plead with us to take in the most desperate kids in the community.
While my mind reasons that taking in more is impractical, my heart bleeds upon looking these teary kids in the faces and turning them away. I understand that WAMA-UGANDA can‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚’t help all the needy kids in the communities but we felt like taking in just 10 more would be bearable.
The challenge however has been the state of the accommodation premises. We have rooms at present but as you know we are renting the premises of the orphanage, which would well take care of 40 kids with each room taking in 7 to 8 kids and 1 caregiver. However, because we lack such supplies as beds, mattresses, blankets, bed sheets, mosquito nets and some refurbishment of the rooms i.e. plastering and painting. If we got these in place and a permanent orphanage without renting, our children would have some dignity in the rooms but due to the need, the 40 children are sharing 7 rooms . This gives each room an average of like to 6 kids per room. Imagine the congestion, some of them wet their beds and so every morning gives us work to clean and put their stuff outside to have the sun kill germs. I would pray that the Lord comes through because this state makes it hard for us to control flues skin infections and other contagious conditions.

However, when more than 40 children look to you for their education and other living necessities, there is not much left to do than to ask whoever will to come alongside in the cause. tomorrow is schools‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚’ opening day, we need over $1000 in tuition, i owe the medical clinic $700, the food supplier $400, electricity $230, water $80, nutritional supplements $210 etc etc. all this is just in debts not mentioning what is needed to run the work. All the suppliers are looking to what we owe so as to send their own kids to school. This has put us in a desperate situation which makes me frantic hence asking for givers to consider WAMA-UGANDA. please consider to help.

WIDOWS PROGRAMMES
There is increasing evidence to show that female-headed households face the incidence of poverty much more than the male-headed ones. A study in Botswana found out that male-headed households had about 2 to 8 times more earning power in the urban areas and rural areas respectively. This situation places enormous responsibility on women as sole breadwinners and has adverse implications for productivity and income generation at the household level and for child survival and development. Considering the scarce chance for a widow, especially an AIDS victim, it is a foregone conclusion that their situation is bound to be ugly. Although research in Uganda about writing wills and planning succession reveals that stand-by guardians are predominantly male, women assume much of the responsibility for orphaned children ultimately.

WAMA-Uganda found out that the income generating capacity of these households is profoundly constrained by: numerous dependent children; lack of opportunity to accumulate productive resources like cattle, goats, and farming implements; and difficulty in getting access to credit. They are further constrained by limited education and training which limits their employability. WAMA-Uganda has countered this trend by organizing widows in groups, and then offers them different skills, depending on their own choice and demonstrable ability for sustainability. Some have chosen to learn sewing, so WAMA-Uganda gave 30 sewing machines to 30 groups, each with 4 members. These widows are also trained in personal financial management, idea generation and entrepreneurship development, and how to live positively with AIDS, or how to avoid it all together. Those that excel are fronted and recommended for funding from any of the three microfinance institutions that we partner with, or any other of their choice. Another group is being trained in the making of marketable local handicrafts so that in the event that resources make a way, a shop that specializes in only these products will be put up in either Kampala or Jinja.

WAMA-Uganda is also involved in the promotion of vegetable farming, in a bid to bring the required nutritional needs of these people as close to them as possible, income generation notwithstanding. WAMA-Uganda buys the inputs such as hoes, watering cans, wheelbarrows, fertilizers, seeds and the like. To depart from the subsistence norm, the clients of this project are required to possess two gardens: one for home and the other for commercial use. Should funds become available, WAMA-Uganda is planning to scale up this project as it has proved to be highly beneficial to the widows in particular and the PLWAs in general.
EDUCATION
The fatality of this epidemic is most profoundly manifested by the extent to which it saps, not only the energy of the victim, but the intrinsic mechanisms that propel a society to progress. Education is such a vital ingredient of a country‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚’s recipe for development, as it is known to furnish the tools with which children and young people carve out their lives. Education is a lifelong source of comfort, renewal and strength. Children‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚’s school attendance and enrollment have been severely battered by AIDS, to such an extent that countries like The Central African Republic and Swaziland have reported a drop in school enrollment and attendance of 20%-36%, attributed to AIDS and orphan hood.

Uganda has moved a step in the right direction by embracing Free Primary Education for all since 1997. Despite this, studies have uncovered glaring gaps in the quality of teaching and an astronomical increase in the number of dropouts, decreasing enrollment notwithstanding. This, they say, is a function of implicit costs like building fees, feeding, uniforms, books, pens and other scholastic materials, plus the incidence of AIDS, where they deal with total household income shrinking, labor loss, medical care and funeral costs. Some children are required to stay home to cater for terminally ill relatives.

WAMA-Uganda realized the responsibility to plug this gap in helping non-school going children access formal education through the provision of the stringent scholastic requirements necessary. Cognizant that AIDS robes children of their parents, we trace the next of kin to them and place them there, so as to keep that unique semblance of parental attachment going. In the absence of these, we identify families with the capacity to absorb one or two extra souls, and then place them there. These families are expected to treat the orphans as though they are their own children, by providing them with whatever their families would: food, shelter, medical care, education, clothing, but above all, love without peripheral qualifications. WAMA-Uganda now visits these homes twice every month to supervise and ascertain compliance to our minimum set standards.

We hope that through the partnership with volunteers and organizations will help to provide funding and opportunities to build a home to accommodate children who have lost their parents to AIDS and have not been placed with foster families. Groups or individuals with engineering, plumbing, construction, carpentry, or electrical skills are needed. We need your support towards acquiring the land to build the home for the children, for as of now the organization is taking care of 35 children in a place that does not accommodate well for this amount of children.

Administration
The Child Welfare Department is responsible for home visits and school evaluation visits. The HIV/AIDS Department is responsible for processing HIV screenings and counseling. Both administrative areas are in need of help.

Rural Health Initiative
The organization has a plan to have a mobile clinic that will provide medical access to rural villages. WAMA-Uganda will conduct HIV screenings, treat people with HIV/AIDS and provide counseling. Services will be provided to people with general ailments. Doctors, nurses, and dentists will always be needed. Opportunities to serve with WAMA-Uganda staff are available to those with medical training to help the dying people in Jinja and Uganda at large.

The church as NEW LIFE CHRISTIAN CENTER) holds the key to defeating this modern-day plague. Children can suffer because of AIDS, even when they don't have the disease themselves. When a parent dies prematurely, a child's world collapses. Anxiety, depression and despair are common as a child tries to adjust to life without his or her parents. If dealing with grief isn't difficult enough, children are sometimes shunned by the community because they are feared. At a time when emotional support is needed most, people often turn away. It is usually not intentional. It happens because, in spite of the disastrous statistics surrounding the AIDS pandemic, there are many myths and misinformation about HIV/AIDS.

HIV/AIDS Orphans & Vulnerable Children
HIV/AIDS provides an opportunity for the Christian church and community to share the love of Christ with those who are suffering from the disease. Your gifts will support programs that provide care to people with AIDS and their families, including home-based care and hospice programs. A $50 gift per month can provide the resources, including food, medication, or hygiene items, to care for one family with home-based assistance.
HIV/AIDS Medical Programs
With 42 million men, women, and children infected with HIV/AIDS, the medical needs facing mission hospitals and other medical facilities are enormous. Your gifts will assist programs that provide medical care, including medications and counseling to prevent mother-to-child transmission, for those infected with HIV. A gift of $15 can supply medication and post-natal counseling to prevent one HIV-infected mother from passing the virus on to her child.
Working with vulnerable children is a concerted effort. It needs a lot of hands to be put together, and a lot of ideas. The orphan problem does not only belong to people with orphans. It is everybody‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚‚’s problem.

Priority Area That Needs Funding In Short Term
In our struggle against HIV/AIDS, we have found that empowerment of the widows in fight against poverty needs immediate attention.

We discovered that poverty is high speed vehicle increasing the rate of transmission of AIDS. Widows and orphans are highly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS especially if they can not meet their basic needs. i.e food, education and medical care.
They are therefore vulnerable to sexual exploitation.

Plans

1. We plan to start a piggery project that will benefit 80 needy families across Mafubira at the cost of 3,400.000.ug.{$1889]
2. We also plan a poultry project to benefit 40 families at the cost of 4,500,000 ug.{$5278}
3. A Heifer project for 30 families at the cost of 7,000,000 ug.{$3889]
4. A totals of 150 families can benefit from those three project at the cost of 14,900,000 ug.{$11,066}

Orphan Education

1. Cater for education needs of 100, orphans in secondary school for year 12,000,000 ug.{$66,667]
2. Catering for education needs for 300,needy orphans in primary school per year at 5,400,000ug{$3,000]
3. Cater for education needs 500 orphans in nursery schools at 6,000,000ug.{$43,334 }
4. Promotion of AIDS awareness through music, drama and shows 5,400,000ug{ $ 3,000}
5. We also need funding for reorganizing our headquarter in terms of record keeping at cost of 6,500,000 ug.{$ 3,778}

1. We have plan an AIDS care centre for treatment of HIV/AIDS patients.
2. We shall need nursing volunteers.

4. School dropouts [orphans] to train in basic skills.e.g tailoring, computer studies.
5. Exchange visits in and out of Uganda.
