Washtenaw Area Council for Children

Organization Description:

Washtenaw Area Council for Children (WACC) is a non profit that was founded in 1975.

WACC programs are designed to stop child neglect, maltreatment and abuse before it starts. Its programs are:
Internet Safety Program: This program was created to make young people and others aware of the risks of using the Internet unwisely. Middle and High School students are trained to become Internet Safety mentors to their peers. Peer Mentors have been trained at Milan, Dexter, Whitmore Lake, Forsythe and Manchester Schools. Trainings are also being held for parents.

Body Safety Training: We offer workshops to preschool and elementary school children to keep them safe from sexual abuse.

Shaken Baby Syndrome Program: Shaken Baby Syndrome is caused by the violent shaking of a young child, and yet many caregivers do not realize that shaking a baby is a form of abuse and can lead to serious injury. We offer trainings to caregivers and potential caregivers of children on handling babies.

Safe Sleep Initiative – this program was launched in 2006 to address preventable infant deaths caused by unsafe sleep practices. Caregivers and professionals are trained on safe sleep practices.

Luncheon Lecture Series and Annual Conference: Each year we offer a series of 2 hour lectures on topics focusing on keeping children safe and parenting. This year’s series focused on identifying, understanding and treating trauma.
