Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland

Organization Description:

Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland is a non-profit organization that has been helping vulnerable girls since 1960.

Little Sisters are girls between the ages of 7 and 17 who are interested in developing a friendship or tutoring relationship with a caring adult woman through the Big & Little Sister program or the Study Buddy program. Many Little Sisters suffer from low self-esteem, social isolation and a lack of enriching experiences as a result of poverty, family distress, abuse, or loss. Our Little Sisters come from various family backgrounds such as foster care, single-parent families, dual-parent families, etc.

A volunteer mentor or tutor provides each of these girls with a champion and a friend - someone to believe in them, trust them, and support them on an ongoing basis. Big Sisters programs are designed to build the confidence and self esteem of these girls one friendship at a time. We have seen, first-hand, that when a young girl truly believes in herself, so much is possible!
